π Divisional Game | Wake Forest Fungo @ Reidsville Luckies π
Luckies-Fungo game ends in tie
REIDSVILLE, NC β The thunderstorms sweeping across North Carolina refused to allow this game to go nine innings. After six innings of play, and a tie score of one run apiece, Chenzo Scanio shook hands with Trevor Schock as the Luckies brought a tarp onto the field.
It is unclear whether the game will go into the standings as a tie or the game will not count altogether. The most unlikely scenario that is nearly impossible is that the game is resumed at a later date, as every day until the final record is submitted is filled up with games, so there are no empty days on the schedule for this game to be made up.
The offensive side of this game for the Luckies was parallel to Sundayβs game against the Carolina Yankees. Last week, in the first inning, Nigel Robinson got on base and Ryne Rodrigues hit a sacrifice fly. The Luckies did not score again in that game. That is exactly what happened when the Luckies took on the Fungo, as Robinson hit a double and Rodrigues scored him with a sacrifice to right field.
Thankfully, Jasean Brown was on the mound. After the Fungo scored one run in the first, Brown allowed just one more hit. When Cole McLain relieved him in the fifth inning, it was still tied, 1-1.
Neither offense could put a run on the board, and after six innings, rain had started to pour at Jaycee Park. The umpire met with both managers, and they decided that the game could not be played out due to field conditions.
Lucky of the Game: Jasean Brown owns innings two through five, doesnβt allow an earned run
Jasean Brown did a marvelous job putting down batter after batter. While the offense did not capitalize, it is hard to deny that Brown put the Luckies in a situation where they could have seized the lead time and time again.
Moment of the Game: Cal Nielsen makes another amazing play to put the runner stealing at second back in the dugout
I wrote earlier in this edition about how this game was dΓ©jΓ vu in the sense that the offense paralleled Sundayβs game against the Yankees. That wasnβt the only thing that happened in this game for a second time.
Cal Nielsen made a carbon copy of his first-ever Moment of the Game against the Hushpuppies. Nielsen threw it with the accuracy of a quarterback to second baseman Gavin Fleming, who made the grab and the tag to put MacMillan out. Right after that, Elijah Jordan struck out. So, much like the last time Nielsen made a great throw, the next pitch after that was the last of the inning. Nielsen shows an ability to provide an extra boost to the defense to finish the inning, and he is a valuable piece to the team behind the dish.
Extra Bases
The Fungo are 11-9, and the Luckies are 9-9. Itβs a two-horse race for the final playoff spot between those two, and Reidsville has a big opportunity this weekend to take a spot in the Old North State League βYou Can Go Home Nowβ Cup Tournament.
On-Deck
The Oak City Gliders will host the Luckies on Saturday, and Sunday, the Hushpuppies will play against the Luckies in the makeup from Thursday night. The game is scheduled to take place at Ed Price Field in High Point, but according to sources within the organization, the game may be played at Jaycee Park.
Monday, the Luckies play a doubleheader in Wake Forest, and Tuesday, they host the Clovers in the final game of the season.
