π Divisional Game | High Point Hushpuppies @ Reidsville Luckies π
One of the weirdest games I have ever been a part of anticlimactically ends in tie
REIDSVILLE, NC β From the start, I should have known it would be an odd game.
With no rain, I thought we were in the clear. But due to a valve issue behind the mound, the game time was delayed thirty minutes. Thatβs a first.
The game finally started, and it was just as crazy as the pregame. With the Hushpuppies up 2-1, Cal Nielsen and Maddox King hit back-to-back RBI to seize the lead. But in the fifth inning, the Hushpuppies recaptured the lead.
In inning number six, Cal Nielsen hit his second RBI by knocking in Calvin Keesler. Then, Nigel Robinson walked to the plate as a substitute, with two outs and two men on base. Robinson found himself in a hole in the count early, but he made contact on a fastball that brought Nielsen and King home, giving the Luckies the lead once again!
Lucky Cityβs two-run lead was not enough, however, as the Hushpuppies would score one run apiece in the eighth and ninth inning to tie it. In the bottom of the ninth, the Luckies failed to put any runs on the board, and according to Calvin Keesler, it was nearly impossible to see the ball as the sun had already set.
After nine innings, the umpire met with Chenzo Scanio and Mike Prichett, who shook hands and accepted the game as a tie, due to the darkness on the field.
Lucky of the Game: Cal Nielsen hits multiple RBI as well as keeping some High Point runs off the board with his work behind the plate
Catcher Cal Nielsen did a fantastic job in a game where the name was limiting the damage the Hushpuppies dealt, which he definitely did behind the plate. This is his first-ever Lucky of the Game award.
Moment of the Game: In the top of the seventh, Cal Nielsen catches Tanner Brewer stealing with the throwdown to third
Tanner Brewer was irking Reidsvilleβs pitcher, infield, and fans with his huge leads on bases. But when he got too greedy and tried to get to third base, Cal Nielsen made the throw to third to send Brewer packing. Immediately after this, Charlie Coors hit a 4-3, so with one out and a man on base, it only took two pitches to get out of the jam, all thanks to Nielsenβs prowess as a catcher.
Extra Bases
Carson Moore, the two-way player out of Morehead high school and nephew of owner Steve Shropshire, informed us of why he picked Barton College, if he will both pitch and hit as a Bulldog, and what his favorite dinosaur is.
On-Deck
This was a game the Luckies would like to have back, as they are on a collision course with the Wake Forest Fungo for the final playoff spot and need as many divisional wins as they can get. This is one of those games that down the line, we may look back and see this as a missed opportunity in the season. But as of right now, there are still five games to go in the six games in six days stretch, and Reidsville cannot dwell on the past. They have to push through these next five games, three of which are non-league, and build some momentum.
