🍀 Away Game -- Reidsville Luckies @ Sandhills Bogeys 🍀
Luckies get revenge, devour rivals and reigning champs, the Sandhills Bogeys
Propelled by a top of the first grand slam from Jacob Trivette, the Reidsville Luckies crushed the team that has been crushing us, the Sandhills Bogeys, 12-4.
Travis Hammond, Kristian Amaro, and Edwin Bowman IV were on base, and Trivette came up to the plate. With a 1-2 count, he drilled it, and it went over the center wall, giving the Luckies their first grand slam of the season!
Heading into the fifth inning, it was a 4-3 advantage for the Luckies, as the Bogeys had steadily punched some runs in. Reidsville wouldn’t allow the score to stay that close, however, and delivered three runs. First, Amaro popped up a sacrifice fly to bring in Opata. Then, with the bases loaded once again, Cole McClain got it to drop in left field for a pair of runs.
For the third time of the night, the bases were loaded, this time in the top of the seventh. Hammond brought one home, and the bases remained full. Opata seized the moment with a two-RBI double, bringing Amaro up to bat. The former Lucky of the Game then launched another sacrifice fly, and Hammond came home. Finally, Opata made it to home plate, courtesy of Bowman IV, extending the lead to nine.
The final score was 13-4, and Gavin Grouppuso was the last to score, being knocked in by Hammond.
Extra Bases: Yesterday, I interviewed Ryne Rodrigues, Luckies outfielder and power hitter, and his father, Danny Rodrigues, who was in attendance for Vipers Night.
Above is the interview with Danny. H/T to Joe Dexter for that John Fogerty background music. Below is the interview with Ryne.
Notes: I can’t overstate, or overemphasize, how massive this win was for the Luckies. Reidsville was outscored by Sandhills 29-12 overall in the past two outings, but this time, we nearly mercy ruled the champions! If the Luckies can somehow ride this wave of momentum into victories over the High Point Hushpuppies and the Sanford Spinners, they could be in prime playoff position. This weekend is a vital one, and the green and red kicked it off right.
On-Deck: As stated, the Luckies face the Hushpuppies tomorrow, and the Spinners on Sunday. On Monday, they play against the Kinston Wingmen at Lancer Field for the first time ever.
Don’t miss my interview with former MLB player and Red Sox Hall of Famer, Bernie Carbo, in tomorrow’s edition of Extra Bases.
