π Away Game -- Reidsville Luckies @ Sandhills Bogeys π
Luckies suffer mercy-rule loss to the divisional leaders
Reidsvilleβs winning streak was snapped when they were defeated by the Sandhills Bogeys, 16-6, in a contest that was stopped after the seventh inning.
The early goings werenβt a disaster, as they were only down seven to two. After last nightβs comeback, and the one two nights ago, it definitely didnβt seem insurmountable.
In the sixth inning, however, things got out of hand. The Luckies gave up eight runs, and, given the chance to put up some offense in the seventh, they brought home four. That wasnβt enough, though, and when Sandhills scored again, the ten-run, seven-inning lead warranted a mercy rule.
Extra Bases: For this away game edition of Extra Bases, I interviewed Kristian Amaro, the catcher for our very own Reidsville Luckies. I did this yesterday, after the amazing comeback, so the mood was obviously lighter than it wouldβve been after tonightβs game.

βThank you for the opportunity. How are you feeling today?β
βIβm doing great man, Iβm doing great.β
βDoes it feel good to get a big win against this team β a comeback?β
βYeah, it was a good team win, we did a really solid job of coming back.β
βSecond night in a row. So, when did you first begin playing baseball, and who got you into it?β
βI began playing baseball around, I would say it was eight, and it was my dad. He taught me everything I need to know on the baseball field.β
βWeβve seen you playing catcher often, is that your favorite position?β
βYeah, thatβs my main position, the position I always like to play.β
βHow long have you been a catcher?β
βIβve been a catcher ever since I was nine.β
βA lot of experience there. Are there any players that you model your game after?β
βI try to model my game after Yadi [Yadier Molina, who is also a catcher from Puerto Rico], I like how he catches, how he throws, everything.β
βThe roster says that youβre from Ohio, but you got to college in South Carolina, and you wear a little Puerto Rico patch. How does that work?β
βMy story is kind of a crazy one. I moved from Puerto Rico to Ohio for my freshman year of high school. Iβve had a long journey, and after high school, I went to D2 in Charleston, West Virginia. I made my way down, and Iβm just trying to find a good home that I can play for. Thatβs my main goal right now, trying to find a school that I will be a part of for the next two years.β
βIβve always been wondering, I saw it in your Twitter bio, the Puerto Rican flag, and I was like, βThatβs interesting,β so I looked at the roster, and it said some city in Ohio. How did you find out about the Reidsville Luckies?β
βI found out through my friend that plays here, his name is Asael. He told me about the Old North State League, and we just found an area around here that was close to play for, and I wanted to gain more game reps and help the team in every way possible.β
βYou chose the right team. Whatβs your favorite part about being a Lucky?β
βThe favorite part is just being around these guys. They have tons of energy, they always want to play, want to win.β
βA good brotherhood around?β
βFor sure.β
βYou all love each other, that helps with team chemistry.β
βYes, helps team chemistry a lot, itβs been showing recently.β
βThatβs been translating to wins, you have three in a row after starting off kind of rough. Iβm going to end on a fun one, whatβs your favorite color?β
βFavorite colorβ¦ Iβd say itβs red. I like red, you got it on the Luckies thing, too.β
βYeah, thatβs part of the logo. There we go. Thank you, thank you so much.β
Notes: This was a hard loss, but not exactly surprising. The Bogies now have five wins and two losses, mercy rules in their last three games, and have scored a staggering fifty-four runs over that stretch. Thereβs a reason that theyβre the reigning champions.
Upcoming: Sigh. This is going to be a difficult week. Tomorrow, they have an off day, but Tuesday, they travel to Hendersonville to try to take down the team that lost to the Bogeys in last yearβs championship series. The Honeycrisps have seven wins, with just one loss, in league play, and are on a six-game winning streak. The Luckies will have another rest day, before facing the Native American National Team in non-league play at home. Friday, they face the Bogies again in an away game, and Saturday, theyβll head to High Point to face the Hushpuppies, who mercy ruled them last week.
