🚨 Breaking News | Luckies play Fungo tomorrow in triple header to decide fate of their season 🚨
It doesn't get much bigger than this.
In what will essentially be a playoff series, the Reidsville Luckies take on the Wake Forest Fungo three times tomorrow.
It is do or die for Lucky City.
Standings as of Right Now
Since the Clayton Clovers won both the first-half and second-half Central Division championship, the second team from the division to make the postseason is decided by combined first-half and second-half win percentage in Old North State League games.
The Fungo hold an 11-9 record, while the Luckies are half-a-game behind with a 10-9 record. The tiebreaker between the Fungo and the Luckies based on the season series between the teams is thrown out altogether due to the amount of games played and what would have to take place for the tiebreaker to come into effect being deemed nearly impossible.
Implications of Tomorrow’s Games
For our Luckies to keep their season alive past Tuesday, they must win two of the three games. If they are able to win two games in Wake Forest, they would be at a 12-10 record, beating out the Fungo’s 12-11 record. And, in the dream scenario that the Luckies swept the Fungo and won all three games, they would clinch a playoff spot.
However, the bleak side is that if they do not win at least two matchups in Wake Forest, they are eliminated from playoff contention.
The tricky part is that the games tomorrow decide whether the Luckies play on Tuesday, so if the Luckies were to only win two games, they may have more work to do on Tuesday to decide whether we see postseason baseball at JC Park or not.
Tomorrow’s Gametimes
The first game will begin at 2 PM, and will be a resumption of Friday’s game that went six innings. The game will last three innings, picking back up where they left off, with a one-to-one tie. The Luckies will be batting last.
Cal Nielsen will be the catcher, Landon Parker will man first base, Gavin Fleming will be at second, Sam Melton at third, and Myles Odom will play at shortstop, if the lineup remains the same for Reidsville. In the outfield, Nigel Robinson will be in left, Maddox King in center, and Jacob Trivette in right, if all stays the same. Nielsen and Fleming will be the first batters before heading back to Robinson in the leadoff spot.
Next, the final two games will be treated as a doubleheader, in which both games are seven innings long. The second of the three games will see first pitch at 5 PM.
Final Thoughts
This is the closest thing to a playoff series in the regular season as you can get.
Yes, I am nervous.
