π Away Game at Jaycee Park | Reidsville Luckies @ High Point Hushpuppies π
Luckies keep season alive with 4-0 victory
REIDSVILLE, NC β The Luckies kept their season alive with a 4-0 victory over the High Point Hushpuppies at Jaycee Park.
The fried dough was shut out in the seven inning game, thanks in large part to the work of former Rockingham County Cougar Evan Penny.
Since this was a makeup game, the Luckies were the ones batting in the top-half of the first inning. That didnβt seem to bother them, however, as they leapt out to a 2-0 lead off of a 2 out, 2 RBI double from Brian OβConnell III.
The Luckies had some magic working for them with two outs. In the third inning, with two down, Nigel Robinson on third, and Ryne Rodrigues at first, BOC3 came up to the plate once again. Rodrigues came off the first base bag, getting a big enough lead for the infielders to try to chase him down. Robinson then ran all the way home, as the risk was worth the reward!
After five innings, the Luckies led, 3-0, and Evan Penny left the mound with no runs and five strikeouts, a truly remarkable appearance. Jimmy Wormack took the sixth inning, not allowing a hit, but unfortunately, he was experiencing some arm pain.
Nigel Robinson and Maddox King hit back-to-back doubles, scoring Robinson his second run of the game. With a four to zero lead in the final inning, Cole McLain relieved Wormack.
When two runners got on base and one out, Jason Howe grounded into an entertaining double play to end the game, improving the Luckies to over .500 and keeping their postseason hopes alive!
Lucky of the Game: Evan Penny pitches a five-inning shutout to help Luckies stay on top
Penny was throwing absolutely dimes to Landon Parker, and the batters struggled to make any contact. Penny earns his first-ever Lucky of the Game and becomes the fourth pitcher this season to earn the honor.
Moment of the Game: With two outs and Nigel Robinson on third, Ryne Rodrigues distracts the infield and allows Robinson to score
Rodrigues, with a baseball IQ of 160, had the Hushpuppies fooled into believing they had gotten their third out with a chase down. Robinson came home standing up, and the Luckies gained a 3-0 advantage they would never let go of.
Rodrigues becomes the fifth Lucky to win three Moment of the Game awards.
Extra Bases
Breaking news.
The Luckies will face the Wake Forest Fungo in a tripleheader tomorrow that decides the fate of the rest of the season.
With the Luckies sitting at a 10-9 divisional record, and the Fungo just ahead with an 11-9 record, whoever wins two games out of three would be in position to take that final playoff spot.
According to sources within both the Luckies and the Fungo organization, Tuesdayβs games are to be decided based on the fate of the triple header in Wake Forest tomorrow. The first game will consist of the three innings that werenβt finished on Friday at Jaycee Park, and the second and third will be seven innings apiece.
If the Luckies lose two out of the three games in Wake Forest, the season is effectively over.
No pressure.
On-Deck
As mentioned in Extra Bases, the three games tomorrow is the only thing we know will take place. Tuesday, depending on the outcomes of tomorrowβs games, could feature baseball at Jaycee Park, in which they would likely play the Clayton Clovers or the Oak City Gliders, or maybe even both.
Just one thing is certain. Tomorrow is essentially a playoff series.
