Luckies and Yard Goats tie, 3-3, due to lights
REIDSVILLE, NC β Tonight at Jaycee Park, the Reidsville Luckies took on a menβs league team, the Greensboro Yard Goats, in non-league action.
We finally got to see Brennan Fleming, identical twin of Gavin, in a Luckies uniform on the bump. Brennan, NJCAA REGION 10 Division III Pitcher of the Year, put the first three batters down, but unfortunately, in the second inning, Luke Wilhelm and Logan Conklin of the Yard Goats would score. Through three innings of work, Brennan allowed three hits and struck out four batters, and Jasean Brown then relieved him. Batters went 4-13 against Brown, who did not allow any runs during his three innings of work.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Luckies finally tacked some offense on. Landon Parker hit a triple, and Ryne Rodrigues, reigning Lucky of the Game, hit an RBI double. After six, the score was 2-1 in favor of the Yard Goats.
Carson Moore then took over on the mound, and didnβt allow any hits in the top of the seventh. Nigel Robinson reached on an error, and then Gavin Fleming reached on an error at third base that allowed Robinson to race home and tie the game at 2 apiece!
In the top of the eighth, with two outs and two runners in scoring position, Bobby Amato was the victim of a fielderβs choice that allowed the Luckies the chance to recapture the lead. However, in the bottom of the eighth, nothing beneficial went Reidsvilleβs way, and Cole McLain was headed to the mound in the top of the ninth. Check out my pre-game interview with him below, and then read how that ninth inning went.
McLain walked the first two batters, before punching out Derick Martinez. Then, DJ Dover hit the ball over second base to knock in Luke Wilhelm, before Barrett Crodfelter got on base. With the bases loaded, Ryne Rodrigues, Cole Price, and Landon Parker connected for a 5-4-3 to limit the damage to just one run in the top of the final inning.
In the bottom of inning nine, down one, Brian OβConnell and Nigel Robinson got on base. Gavin Fleming was called out on strikes, before Jacob Trivette hit it deep to center field to bring home OβConnell and tie the game! Landon Parker grounded into a fielderβs choice, and with Rodrigues up at the plate, runners on the corners, two outs, two balls, two strikes, and a tie game, he was caught looking on strikes.
The game was all knotted up at three runs for each team, and the umpire called the game off due to the lights behind the field not lighting up in time, leading us to a non-league tie that βSantaβ Eric Smith was not happy about.
Lucky of the Game: Nigel Robinson
There are many things, especially on a night like this one, that do not show up in your scorebook. Nigel Robinson started out 0-2, shook it off, showed what he was made of in center field, overcame a cramp, stole a base, tied the game with a run in the seventh inning, and would have been the winning run if someone could have just knocked him in during that ninth inning. Robinson did a fantastic job tonight, and you can see why he is a Division I player with the NCA&T Aggies.
Moment of the Game: Zachary Cimino grabs the baseball in a tied eighth inning with Barrett Crodfelter rounding third and headed for home, and delivers it right into catcher Jacob Trivetteβs chest with time to spare
The best make it look easy, and Zachary Cimino effortlessly launched the ball from left field to home plate to keep the score tied. Cimino went to the Burlington High School, where he was teammates with Landon Parker, and took a redshirt freshman year in 2024 at Mars Hill. I know for a fact that any coach, travel, high school, or college, would have been pleased with that beauty of a throw.
Extra Bases
I interviewed David Woods, who is attending Liberty University right now and interning with the Reidsville Luckies, after the game.
On-Deck
The Luckies play in Danville on Friday and in High Point on Saturday. Then, next Sunday, Jaycee Park welcomes back rivals of the Luckies, the Oak City Gliders, at 5 PM.
