π Interleague Game -- Carolina Ducks @ Reidsville Luckies π
Luckies lose in non-league thriller
REIDSVILLE, NC β The Luckies, employing six different pitchers, werenβt able to hang onto the lead, and lost to the Carolina Ducks, 7-6.
Lucky City was looking good early on. The first three batters loaded the bases for Kristian Amaro to land a 2-RBI double. But, after, three innings, it was a tie ballgame, 4-4 each, and it would stay close throughout the game.
In the sixth inning, Joe Swanekomp delivered on a triple, just down the right line, to bring Konnor Kubis and Kale Richardson home, seizing a two-run lead. The Luckies couldnβt do anything at the plate, and, following six innings, the Ducks were winning, 7-5.
Nobody could get anything going, and the Luckies headed to the bottom of the ninth, down by two. Travis Hammond, who had subbed in, singled, but Dalton Fryar and Andrews Opata would out. Jay Allred kept the game alive, and Edwin Bowman IV was walked. Hammond had come home; Allred was on third; Bowman IV had stolen second.
It was up to Amaro. The catcher went up to the plate with his team down one and two runners in scoring position. He worked the count up, before popping it up, way out there, to center field, ending the game and giving the Ducks the dub.
Lucky of the Game: Blake Freeman β Blake Freeman started off the game with a single, and, when the bullpen was having trouble keeping runs off the board, the submariner came to the mound for the first time this season. He did very well for a guy who hasnβt pitched any this season, and is usually an infielder.
Moment of the Game: Andrews Opata catches it deep in right field, and, with runner at second, fires it to third to stop the runner from advancing β Opata was on a hitting streak coming into the game, and, when he didnβt produce like normal at the plate, he made up for it in the outfield. Not many players couldβve made that MLB-esque play.
Fun Events β Kona Ice returned to Jaycee Park, TJ Highsmith joined us in the booth, and Edwin Bowman III, the father of Edwin Bowman IV, spoke with us as his son got on base. Tomorrow night, weβll bring Travis Hammondβs dad in the booth, as we continue to honor dads on Fatherβs Day weekend.
Notes β The Luckies clearly werenβt pulling out all the stops for the win tonight. Some of the best players were out, and it seemed that manager Chenzo Scanio was looking to test out everybody and their mother on the pitching mound.
On-Deck β Tomorrow evening, the Reidsville Luckies host the Oak City Gliders in what is sure to be an entertaining game. Sunday, on Fatherβs Day, theyβll take on the division-leading Sanford Spinners, who are likely looking for revenge after last game.
